The Republican Party Is Held Hostage by the Trumpists

Most members of the Republican Party in the Senate and House of Representatives of the US Congress have a clear and common position on the foreign policy of the United States, which conceptually does not contradict the position of the Democratic Party (it is clear that there are certain differences, if to talk about details). In particular, this concerns the provision of aid to Taiwan, Israel and Ukraine, the introduction of changes to the migration legislation, the construction of a huge engineering barriers (the so-called wall) on the border with Mexico, etc.

Conceptually, Republicans and Democrats agree on these issues. However, there are relatively small groups of radical ultra-conservative supporters of Donald Trump in both Houses of Congress, who, unfortunately, use populist, isolationist, conspiracy-minded, and militant-Protestant rhetoric with great success. In fact, these small groups of Trumpists (especially in the House of Representatives) are holding all members of the US Republican Party hostage.

As for domestic politics, the Trumpist Republicans cynically and shamelessly blackmail the Democrats and the White House with the approval of the budget, not afraid of a shutdown of the entire country, and first of all, the state apparatus. So far, both parties in both houses of Congress have reached an agreement on the adoption by January 19 of a short-term bill on temporary funding, which will make it possible to avoid a partial shutdown of the state apparatus, at least until March 8. However, in the future, the blackmail from the ultra-right Republicans will continue and the two main American parties will once again have to look for a compromise and some leverage on the group of Trumpists.

It should be recalled that on January 8, the leader of the democratic majority in the Senate Chuck Schumer and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Mike Johnson, announced that, in general, the two parties managed to agree the budget for 2024 in the amount of more than 1.6 trillion US dollars. US President Joe Biden has approved the agreement and agreed that the level of funding is more or less in line with the plans that the White House has developed for this year.

However, now it is necessary that both chambers of Congress urgently pass 12 bills needed to extend the financing of the US government until March 8. Otherwise, on January 19, funds for programs in the transport sector, housing construction, military construction, veterans, agriculture and energy would be stopped. And, in two weeks (that is, from February 2), funds would be ceased to be allocated for all other government programs, including in security and defense.

Currently, Republicans continue to insist on reducing public spending by cutting or even canceling a number of government programs, mostly designed for socially vulnerable population or those related to the participation of the United States in combating global climate change on the planet.

Of course, none of the Democrats object to the possibility of discussing all these topics. However, the intrigue lies in the fact that, while the majority of Republicans are fighting for their conservative values through civilized dialogue, a small group of ultra-radical Trump sympathizers is openly blackmailing other members of the Republican Party and the entire Congress, while leading the entire state to destabilization, chaos, and perhaps even civil conflict!
