Immigrants Aren’t “Taking Our Jobs” and Immigration Isn’t Actually An Issue
It’s a myth as old as time. The boogie man of immigrants is a political scapegoat that has been used by politicians to deflect attention away from real issues and their real causes.
If you look back throughout our history as a country, the group always changes, but somehow it’s always a “problem”. At one point it was the Chinese, at another point it was Polish, at another point it was Italians, at another point it was Irish, at another point it was various African groups, at another point it was Arabs, and now it’s mostly Latinos.
The truth is, most people benefit from immigrants coming to this country and the country as a whole benefits from immigration as well. We’re literally a country of immigrants. Immigrants come to this country and usually have to work from the bottom up, meaning they take the lowest paying jobs that no one actually wants to do. And if we didn’t have immigrants, the people complaining about immigration would be the first to also complain about things not getting done and having to do things they don’t want to do for low wages.
Beyond that, no one ever complains about any immigrants with any level of skill. As one comedian said, you don’t see surgeons in the lobby of the Beverly Hills Hotel complaining about immigrant surgeons, coming and taking all the good surgeon jobs. If you lost out on a job because someone who can’t speak English and has no education or “skills”, and THEY’RE more qualified than you, then you’re a sack of shit. Welcome to capitalism baby, that’s the free market for you and I know half the people that hate on immigrants are allegedly also big proponents of the free market.
Finally, immigration is a “issue” that snowballs on itself. The whole argument that “immigrants just need to do it legally” is ridiculous. Immigration to this country is very difficult and expensive legally. That has become a problem because politicians convince people that immigration is an issue at all, which forces them to pretend like they need to make laws to make it harder to come to this country, which fuels illegal immigration. On top of that, most of the immigration we see is a direct result of their political interference other countries. Latin America is a great example. The number of times our government has meddled in countless political issues in Latin America, interfering in elections, propping up dummy governments, and bringing down governments that are perceived to be against our interest, whether or not they actually are, then those countries become unlivable and people try to immigrate here. And then the same politicians use those people as scapegoats, and so on.
