RIAA Sues Man For Humming Own Copyrighted Song

Satire (but probably not for long)

John Post, a college student whose band “Unforseen Consequences” was signed by a local record label last year, is being sued by the RIAA for humming one of his band’s songs, which he wrote, while waiting in line at a coffee shop near the college he attends. According to the case notes, he was seen ‘reproducing copyrighted material for public consumption’.

Post claims his band had rehearsed the night before and had the song stuck in his head all morning. He says he didn’t even realize he was humming the song while he waited in line for his morning caffeine fix.

The RIAA declined to comment on the specifics of the case, but reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy on copyright infringement. “There is no excuse for theft. We hope this individual learns the lesson well, and that his friends and fellow students are deterred from this sort of activity. We exist to protect artists from such heinous acts of piracy.”

Post insists that he wrote the song himself and should be able to hum it whenever he sees fit. But the RIAA isn’t backing down, claiming that copyrighted material cannot be reproduced in any form without the express written permission of the RIAA.
