First they come for the Oligarchs, then they come for you. The reasons why everyone should be concerned about what's happening to all those shady Russian billionaires.
The countries of the West have just frozen the assets of an unnamed number of wealthy Russians (yachts, jets, villas, bank accounts) some of which are citizens of other countries besides Russia. Now I know there's a certain schadenfreude that accompanies this event; we're all tired of the world's elite forever enriching themselves at the rest of our expense. I'm also aware that a very high percentage of these oligarchs are little more than mafia bosses and probably deserve everything that is coming to them.
However what really bothers me, is that these seizures have been done outside the legal frameworks of our societies and as of yet, none of these people have been charged with any crime. Because their assets have been frozen as a result of sanctions, they are beyond the realm of the law and have no legal recourse.
As this article stipulates, the assets still belong to the oligarchs (for now) but prosecutors now have to build a case of criminality before they can essentially steal these people's shit. In the meantime, their assets are frozen in limbo, likely for many years:
So basically we're talking about the presumption of innocence getting thrown out the window, purely on the basis of nationality.
These people are presumed guilty just because of the country they were born in.
This is an extremely slippery slope that the powers that be are embarking on.
Ask yourself, if the governments of the world can do this to people with that much power and established connections, how easy would it be for them to do it to you? Now I realise that there's a big gap between Russian oligarchs and the everyman, but this is how liberties are lost, the 'totalitarian tiptoe' that sneaks up on you.

The Russians wanted to be kicked off SWIFT
Several years ago, I made a sincere attempt (with the help of my public library) to learn more about the world of money and finance. One of the books that I came across was goldbug James Rickards' Currency Wars: The Making of the Next Global Crises.
In the first chapter, he describes his involvement in the very first financial war games held by the US government and military in 2009. That this occurred as late as 2009 is in itself is mind-blowing. The United States, the largest military and economic power on the planet, had/has a massive blind spot.
As a member of the Russian team, he plotted with a friend on the Chinese team to move away from the dollar to a separate gold-backed currency. While he succeeded in convincing his team to go along, he was met with derision when the move was presented to the greater conference, where he was told that he can't play "outside the box" like that. Funnily enough, and before the war game had ended, Vladimir Putin himself publicly spoke of his desire to move away from the dollar. Rest assured, the author made sure to let his opponents know.
This idea was presented in 2009 and then published in the first chapter of his book in 2011.
Many have been left scratching their heads as to exactly WHY Russia would invade Ukraine. There are several reasons that we can latch on to, when considering the regional and global consequences, and many have even questioned Putin's sanity. However, I think lost in all of this, and seen by the West as a punishment, is Russia's removal from the SWIFT system and ostracization from the Western economic world. It feels almost as if they wanted this reaction from the West. They needed to do something conventional and "just bad enough" to trigger this response, which forks the global economy. Why settle for one country and whatever spoils you may or may not secure, in an economic system where you are already an outcast, when you could create a whole new world where your influence is larger?
13 years after the idea entered the US government's first financial war game and was rejected, 11 years after it was published, it is not so far fetched to believe that the Russians (and by extension, Chinese) want to use the war in Ukraine to force this move off the current system and towards an entirely different, commodities-based Eastern-centric system.
