Putin's gambit.

Note: Tried to post this in conservative, but it was pulled for review. I've studied history for 42 years, this is my take.

There is much more to this than just NATO expansion. History suggests this is a gambit by Putin for influence.

Eastern Europe (Poland and Hungary the two most obvious) rushed to join NATO, and as a part of that deal, gave up some sovereignty to the EU. This is not going as well as they had hoped, and so there is very big tension again between EU and Eastern Europe.

That's one issue.

The other issue is Germany's disastrous energy policy under Merkel. Germany knows they can't rely on the U.S. for natural gas. They need Russia for years.

So Putin bets it all on one play. Take Ukraine. Stop NATO expansion, and sit. See what the reaction is. If Biden and NATO do nothing, he waits until Germany plays out, and Poland, Hungary, Latvia, et al.

They may at some point coming running into Moscow's open arms.

If this fails? Putin will be assassinated with a month or two.

If NATO responds militarily? All bets are off. China can take Taiwan like candy from a baby. There is no guarantee this doesn't spin out of control and result in early losses for NATO, and Putin emerges even stronger.

For two hundred years or so, Russia has been pissed off at Europe. They're left out of trade deals, and put at the business end of a gun. Napoleon's gun or Hitler's gun, it really doesn't matter.

This is ingrained in Russian diplomacy, much the way the fight against the Soviets is ingrained in our diplomacy (see Mitt Romney and Mitch McConnel and friends.).

The gut reaction in times like this is to be pro-active.

This is a terrible idea. There is nothing we can do right now to make it better, and be sure we have made the situation better.

The only intelligent play is to do absolutely nothing. Wait and see and react as events unfold. Right now, event one is unfolding. Our reaction should be to see the reaction militarily from Ukraine, and politically in Russia. Will the oligarchs and the bureaucracy in Russia follow Putin?

If so, and Russia wins, we can't do a damned thing about it. But we damn sure better prepare for the next move. And that means move slowly to a war footing. Then? We wait again.

Much of this is on Europe. You'd better get right with Eastern Europe. Give Hungary and Poland more of a say in immigration and trade.

Decide an energy policy. With Russia, or without, but make a decision and stick to it. If you're going to rely on Russia, you have to take the good with the bad.

The world is in no position to back Russia into a corner. And no position to back Putin into a corner. But the Russian people and oligarchs can.

The hardest thing for a politician to do is to sit still. Sometimes, it's the best solution. Today, I'm convinced it is the best path forward.

Russians have been spreading disinformation among the Republican Party for years. All of you who insist that Trump was against them, that support that traitor, are manipulated mindslaves. If you really question authority, question THAT fucking authority.
